All you need is salt water...

... sweat, tears, or the sea.
~ Karen Blixen

On many levels this is true, my personal favourit of these is the sea. Around water I feel calm, humble, sincere, and at peace. My dream is to live close to the sea and my favourite time of year by the seaside is in the fall with the rough winds creating gigantic waves. The salty smell and the seaweed instantly calm me, and the drizzle from the foam on my face makes me reload my batteries, and helps me focus on what is truly important to me.

Luckily in Aarhus, we are close to the sea and when the wind is right you can smell the salt.
There are several great spots along the shore, both for bathing and strolling. The spot closest to downtown Aarhus is Tangkrogen (literally The Seaweed Hook) where I spend Tuesday afternoon last week. It was beautiful, strong, sunny, and lonely. I gathered a small collection of blue mussels with mother-of-pearl on the inside.

The wind was rough and a little chilly, but the beautiful hues of the greens and blues along in the sunshine backed it up wonderfully.
I had been in a state of mind where I didn't know anything or what to do, and somehow the sea created a pause for me and my mind was set in a vacuum and thus I could remember something I almost had forgotten - breathing.
Just for half an hour, I could be something else, something less, something more than I had been prior that day.
I walked home with a serene smile on my face and the salty wind in my hair. The emotions I couldn't convey were acted out before me by the sea and the notion that I was just a small part of it all was quite calming.

Weekly Favourites 43

Weekly Favourites 43, 2011

I haven't really been into a shopping mood today. At least it was very limited the amount of items I clipped to Polyvore, and most very classic like these. Well, I guess it comes and goes really - at least I added a full length gown and sequins! Then I haven't lost it yet, ha!

Anyhow, I really like that the Schumacher capris is called Modern Audrey - then you just HAVE to clip it..
But again, another classic. And I did buy a sparkly deep red nail polish from SpaRituals which looks a little like OPI's 'Ali's Big Break' but I will show you when I get time to try it on. It just looked so cute in the bottle and for 38 Dkr (about £3.5) I couldn't resist.

I guess that's all from me now, so have a great weekend and see you Sunday for my Sonnet Sunday-post..

Favourite Things of the Moment

At the moment, I am completely lost to the fresh spring feeling my lilac soap gives me each morning. So welcoming in stead of this frenzy of a fall with too much to do. However, a most amazing contribution from school is my first meeting with Jean Rhys' works. How utterly amazing! If she was a religion I would be a convert..
She has the same gift as I pointed out with Florence Welch from Florence + The Machine, of writing with such precision - knowing fully what to tell and what to leave unsaid - that within her works there unfolds many stories. Stories which you don't see at the first glimp. Heartbreakingly beautiful and excellent. If you have not, then please make Wide Sargasso Sea your next read.
I could almost taste the colours and see the scents she describes.
(how I hope I get that for my oral exam! It would be the most awesome exam ever..)

To cool my exhubiant emotions after such a narrative, I am in love with my new Guerlain eyeshadows. They are quite creamy so this set will last a long time. I choose the more secure palette of greys, blues, and browns with a touch of cobber. A brilliant mix of the sea and the auburn hues of the falling leaves all around.

And last but not least, my Eiffel Tower-necklace from Accessorize to keep reminding me of my plans of one day settling in Paris.
To keep my eye on the goal. Makes me remember that the issues I am dealing with are all just means of an end to get me to Paris and help me become the best that I can be.

Do you have small tokens or items that reminds you of your dreams?

Florence+TheMachine - Shake it Out

Have you heard the first single from Florence + The Machine's new album? It is absolutely devine.
She writes the lyrics that I wish I could write, and has a sound which speaks to my heart - even the things my heart doesn't want to admit yet.
I get sort of weepy and feel my stomach tighten whenever I hear something either profoundly beautiful or something that gets under my skin unintentionally. It haunts me.
I always admire those writers, whether in music or literature, who can write with surgical precision and yet continue to show the great depths within their words. With very few words I think that Florence Welch describes somethings which are hard to define and yet does it so elegantly and poetically too. And her videos are equally melancholic and beautiful as her music and voice.
Please enjoy!

Sunday Sonnet VII

I hope you can see what it says, its much clearer in real life but my scanner nipped out the colour a bit.
The lilac cut-outs are from a soap-box so now my Moleskine smells wonderfully of lilacs! Devine!

Have a wonderful Sunday before next week's hazzle.

Vintage Miscellaneus

A little something something from the old magazines I bought a while back. These are from the 50s and 60s.
My dream is to have teak tree surniture as shown in the ad below. So awesome but so expensive too.. Alas! But I can still dream-decorate my future home and I must admit that is half the fun of decorating - at least!

The text says "Another Cardin-inspired spring model with a small twisted brim. It is made in satin-duchesse quilted on felt so it can be worn from the earliest spring.."

 Gorgeous, no?

This was actually a pattern but unfortunately I don't know how to knit so I am not sure how to translate it for you guys..
But a very sweet summer dress in...... orange? Or sea green?
I like the model's hair as well.

Hope you liked them..

I Tumblr too...

Just to let you know that I also have a tumblr account which I am slowly getting up and running.
So many ways be 'online', it's hard to keep up! But I like them and use them for different reasons.
Mostly they are all created to help my blog. Inspiration come in all shapes and sites, and I want to remember it all.

Anyways, here's the link.

Weekly Favourites 41

Weekly Favourites 41

I am quite smitten by the Casadei two-tone heels. Maybe it is true that if your accesories are of quality you can wear rags and still look and feel like the most stylish lady on the planet. I often find that good shoes and a quality bag can make me feel completely confident and at ease with my appearance - leaving my thoughts open for perhaps more important matters.

My mind has wondered in the fast lane between wanting and longing for the feeling of shade in a heatwave and then loving the icy wind here in Aarhus. My best clothes is for fall but I do feel like escaping for the Caribbean islands and their purple shadows.
This is probably due to me reading Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I love it so far but it does make me long for summer.

Typically of the Northern hemisphere, I guess. In the summer it is too hot, and in the winter we want summer and sunshine..
Oh well, a little summer can be found in the YSL suit and the Versace scarf-blouse. Tres chic, no?

Fall Feeling

These past few days have experienced the coming of fall and as lovely it may be with the warm and rich colours, as cold and sorrowful it can be at the thought of the barreness to come.

In order to fight the angst striking, I went to one of the best bakeries in Aarhus to prevent my flight-wish, namely the Aarhus-originated Emmery's. And the perfect indulgence for this was their Madeleines with orange zest and white chocolate. Perfectly moist and almost melting on your tongue.. Perfect bite.
In addition, they make the most delicious Italien-inspired breads and they have cafés as well in all of their bakeries here in Aarhus.

The first bakery opened down at Guldsmedsgade at the Latin Quarters, but there are also one in Magasin du Nord, and on the corner of M.P. Bruunsgade and Brammersgade. {The last one is on the photo}
The prizes are somewhat higher than a traditional bakery, however I do find that if you are in want of the perfect bread for a date dinner or just for self-indulgence {like me..} this would be the place to go.

As you can see, I was really in the spirit of fall and winter {Truth be told, I actually waited anticipantly for the weather to cool off so I could drink my Winter Teas from Pickwick!} The Madeleines also come in a variant with dark chocolate and nuts, and the prize is one for 10 DKr, and three for 20 DKr [circa £2].

What are your fall or autumn treats?

Wuthering Heights

The lovely cover on my edition of Wuthering Heights just seemed to whisper of falling leaves and warm tea with spices.
The sublime wilderness of The Moors and the ragged feelings of my heart seemed intertwixted, and even the makeup brands have some shades to describe my mood. My head is spinning with wonder and disbelief of the time gone already and somehow longing for the crisp and demure icy winters.

The fall always gets to me and make me want to flee. Flee the feelings of longing for something that is always out of reach and the fire of colours whispering of dead passion.

The last revolt of passion is upon us. Soon come the numb winter and we lay barren until spring.
I don't know whether I should make this fall one to follow my feelings or just prepare for the winter, and the cooling and soothing.

Maybe I should just do it for myself...

Weekly Favourites 40

Oh well, the weekend has passed way too quickly. And the Fall has come with all the beautiful colours and fuzzy coats.
I have always loved the Fall, despite the rain. Or maybe because of the rain.
The gentle tampering of drops at your window, like knocks from outside. The promise of after a Spring, a Summer and Fall will come, and after the death-like Winter, Spring and prospect will come anew.

This week, I have fallen for the rain. The blue-ish colours, the gentle sparkles, and dark clouds.
I always feel cheered up by pink, but the blues somehow always describe my state of mind, whether they be dark and moody, or soft and promising like a Summer's sky.

I think my eyes look like the rain - they change colour depending on the season and the setting, like the rain.
Perhaps that's why I think they are my best feature.

Vintage Illustration

Just a quick post of one of my scans. I don't like cigarettes and am in no way supporting them, I just like the style of this illustration.
Just for the record.

Vintage Vignettes

Some time ago, I bought a whole bunch of vintage magazines and showed some of the lovely illustrations and ads from these. I have only shown you about half of these, but now I feel it is time for a little vintage again. This time, I am not particularly concerned about dates but about the look of the illustrations.

Today, I will show you the black and white vignettes and illustartions from these magazines ranging from 1945 until 1968.
Can you guess which vignettes are from which decade? Can't offer other prize than the honour though..
And if you can't, you can still enjoy the sweetness of them.

*all images are my scans*

Aren't these just lovely?
I find it quite amusing to read these old magazines and it strikes me how little we have changed in 70 years! We still want silky hands and a bright white smile. A smooth complexion and being adored by every creature on the planet.. Nothing less, right!?

Oh, and a lovely tip for you vintage owners out there, who may be the lucky ones owning dresses with gold embroidery: if the gold thread has become dull, slice an onion in half and rub the onion on the embroidery. This should make the gold seem as new. A small tip from the 40s.

Happy Monday and see you soon!
