Vintage Illustrations & Animals

Finally Friday! Happy days ahead... Family gathering for my siblings' birthdays on Sunday (they are not twins though) and a bit of relaxing before yet another busy week. I am slowly but steady getting into my mind framework about my thesis, and I feel ready to start a bit of actual writing next week. So happy days indeed!

 

But today, I will show some of the various scans I have from old magazines and new magazines. Long before I knew the term I have been a scrapbooker - or at least tearing out the things from magazines I liked or which inspired me. Usually, I kept them in plastic envelopes divided by themes - vintage, haute couture, interior, wish list, etc. etc. As I have mentioned here on the blog before, due to a slight try of being more efficient in digging these images out I will post these scans here, so you guys can enjoy them as well.

Naturally though, I may not be able to remember from where precisely these images came from but I will try to credit properly to the best of my ability.

 

I adore old illustrations. Simple as that. And I adore Kay Bojesen's mid-century wood animals.

And I love that both of these things seem to have a sort of revival. On various sites, I see many illustrators' works (just think about Taschen's now 4 volumes about Now Illustration!) and Danish Modern architecture and interior design are still going strong - perhaps stronger than ever these years. Therefore, a little collection of both for you guys to enjoy...

 

 The Bunny, the Hippo with pencil (I recieved this from my sister and her husband for my birthday!), and the Bella the Dashhound which was the first animal that Bojesen created in 1934.

 Perhaps the most iconic, also the one which has been in production the longest, the Monkey from 1951.

 The Elephant from 1953.

Art Deco Fashion

I have just finished a lovely book about pochoir prints of the 1920s, and I just wanted to share some of my favourites.

Art Deco and the clothes from that period are some of my favourites, and I particularly love the style of presentation. The Japaneese-inspired print technique is perfect for these graphical and bold dresses and hairstyles. I love the way they show fur accents and the difference between shiny fabrics and embroidered ones.

The cutest and girliest snack ever! Fairy Bread.

Apparently, it is a huge hit downunder at children's parties and no wonder - sliced white bread with butter and sprinkles. That's it!

Vintage Miscellaneus

A little something something from the old magazines I bought a while back. These are from the 50s and 60s.

My dream is to have teak tree surniture as shown in the ad below. So awesome but so expensive too.. Alas! But I can still dream-decorate my future home and I must admit that is half the fun of decorating - at least!



The text says "Another Cardin-inspired spring model with a small twisted brim. It is made in satin-duchesse quilted on felt so it can be worn from the earliest spring.."

 Gorgeous, no?

This was actually a pattern but unfortunately I don't know how to knit so I am not sure how to translate it for you guys..

But a very sweet summer dress in...... orange? Or sea green?

I like the model's hair as well.

Vintage Illustration

Just a quick post of one of my scans. I don't like cigarettes and am in no way supporting them, I just like the style of this illustration.

Vintage Vignettes

Some time ago, I bought a whole bunch of vintage magazines and showed some of the lovely illustrations and ads from these. I have only shown you about half of these, but now I feel it is time for a little vintage again. This time, I am not particularly concerned about dates but about the look of the illustrations.

Today, I will show you the black and white vignettes and illustartions from these magazines ranging from 1945 until 1968.

Can you guess which vignettes are from which decade? Can't offer other prize than the honour though..

And if you can't, you can still enjoy the sweetness of them.

Aren't these just lovely?

I find it quite amusing to read these old magazines and it strikes me how little we have changed in 70 years! We still want silky hands and a bright white smile. A smooth complexion and being adored by every creature on the planet.. Nothing less, right!?

Oh, and a lovely tip for you vintage owners out there, who may be the lucky ones owning dresses with gold embroidery: if the gold thread has become dull, slice an onion in half and rub the onion on the embroidery. This should make the gold seem as new. A small tip from the 40s.

Rococo Fashion

As you may know, Rococo is one of my favourite time eras in fashion, art, and history. Such friviliousness (is that even a word?!), sex, allure, and charm centered in one century. I do know that experts limit the term rococo to just a section of the 18th century, but I will apply it rather broadly here given that I am not conducting a research engine but mere interests and inspirations.

All of these faboulous beauties are found via Pinterest, and they are all collected in my board Rococo, which is increasingly becoming more and more popular. 1950s Vintage Fashion Illustrations

O' prettiness, O' prettiness - wherefore art these vintage? Photographers! Deny thy work and return to illustration - I would love the clothes so much more..

OK, a somewhat terrible pun on Shakespeare and my want of fahion illustration to have a greater say in today's magazines. In stead of just being a small vignette to the horoscopes I would like whole editorials with illustrations. Just as the clothes transform from the runway to the curated fashion spreads, illustraters do this all at once. No middle man, so to say. Yes, I know, I just keep on rambling about this but it would be so amazing!

Think about it, wouldn't you aspire to something like these more than a photo of a woman digitally mutilated?

Ok, I'll stop now.. I'll just show you in stead.

Maternity dresses. I'm positively dying for the coat! Camel coloured with pink lining.. At least that's how I imagine it.

How smart these young handsomes are in their trenches and plusfours! I doubt that I would ever succeed in getting a 10-year-old into an outfit like that but one must always have something to aspire to, nicht wa?

The elegant lady going to tea. My favourite is the second from left. That draping is so stylish.



At Home clothes. Yeah, I'll share a little secret with you guys - I look NOTHING like this when I'm at home! That waist!

I would almost reconsider never going somewhere cold for a vacation if I had something like this...

The New Look hits Denmark too. This is from 1950 and by then Denmark was slowly loosing the rationing stamps and women were able to some small splurges. Off course, nowhere near the excess of fabric used for the New Look, however, some of the details like cuffs and collars were worked into the dresses and suits they already had. My Grandmother has told me of how luxurious fabric-covered buttons were and double cuffs! I love when she talks about her mother's tailoring business, and her sewing all the beads for the embellishements on after school on their kitchen table under the lamp. It is clear where I have got my interest in fashion from..

1950s Danish Vintage Fashion Photography

A third installment of my vintage magazines from mostly the 1950s. This time, I will consentrate on the fashion inspirations. They are so gorgeous, just you guys wait and see. So funny to think that these are the designs and looks that my grandmother aspired to when she was at my age. These looks somehow never go out of fashion - at least not in my opinion. I will always favour a New Look over a Kate Moss-look despite the crinched waists and probably dying of heat! At least I'll know I did it in style..

I mean, I would positively die to wear a evening coat like the Balenciaga on the right. Oh my Lord!

And I don't think that you can be better or more stylish looking than this lady. Wuaw!

How cool is this purse? It is created to be tied around your wrist so you still can use your hands - stylishly clever!

Tomorrow, I will show you the illustrated fashion inspirations that were in the magazines. Three words for you: To. Die. For!
