Fashion Fix: Carey Mulligan's costume in The Great Gatsby

I know it has only been seconds since my Weekly Favourites post and wish for a good weekend but then I saw this in my news feed, and.... I'm in love! With everything.. I can't even decide which guy I have a cruch on the most, Tobey in his green cardigan or Leo in his dapper white suit.. And off course, you cannot help but love Carey and her infectious smile.

Oh, and do note the two-toned stockings she is wearing!

Downton Abbey

I LOVE period dramas... the settings, the costumes, the story lines - all of it. So not really a big surprice that I love Downton Abbey.

I have always found the era around WW1 to be extremely fascinating and I have always considered the clothes of the era to be my favourites, closely followed by the rococo. And my, does Downton Abbey pull the long straw here! Fantastic costumes, for both upper and lower class.

 Of course, I really adore the hats and evening attire of the upper class characters but the quirkishness of some of the servants' clothes really makes me smile.

Tartan coats, straw hats with small flowers, and more muted colours to contrast with the whites and pastel colours of the noble family.

And in addition, the story line is really good and the acting is superb. So if haven't seen it yet please do.. They are currently shooting season two, and I believe it is to be aired in the fall in the UK. Can't wait for it to hit Denmark again. I may need to rewatch it all on the Internet.

Untill then, I have the main theme on repeat. A very beautiful song, and sums up well the mood of the series.

This dress reminds me of Kate Winslet's evening dress from Titanic. This show starts with the sink of Titanic where the heir of Downton Abbey is presumed drowned, and with the arrival of the new heir and his difficulties with the family already living there. If you imagine Mr Collins from Pride & Predjudice as a nice and likable guy suddenlt finding himself within a family consisting of both The Bennets and the staff from Upstairs & Downstairs you sort of get the picture. (Okay, this was the closest I could get without making spoilers)

This attire has a bit of a Chanel-feel to it.. The stripes, the pearls, the narrow colour scheme and the straw hat.

The upper class ladies' evening dresses are candy to the eyes! Oh, and as you can see Maggie Smith is in it, and she is hilarious! Her remarks are priceless!

The Lord and Lady of Downton Abbey. She wears the most elaborate clothes, a bit old fashioned for 1912 but her youngest daughter surely makes up for that, as you can see in the next picture..

A haram dress with trousers! Love it!!! It looks stunning on screen and causes quite a few raised eyebrows and gasps in the show.. Very Poiret.

The youngest daughter of the noble family and one of the servants. Here you can clearly see the distinction in clothes between upper and lower class, but without making the latter looking sad or demure. At least not in my opinion.

Fashion Fix: Marilyn's White Dress

Anyone got about $2 million to splurge? Then I think you should use it on Marilyn Monroe's white dress from Seven Year Itch..

Debbie Reynolds is selling her collection of film memorabilia including awesome costumes from My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Hello Dolly and Seven Year Itch among others.. Now wouldn't that be the perfect way to celebrate Marilyn's 85th birthday yesterday? {Daily Mail}

I would love to own a costume collection like Debbie Reynold's with film costumes and fashion history items side by side. What items would you include in a collection if you could choose freely? Me? I would get a Fortuny dress, YSL's first dress for Dior and Marilyn's pink dress from How to Marry A Millionaire. Now that would be a perfect start..

[Edit] The dress sold for $4.6 million! And almost all of the costumes went far beyond their estimate. Congrats to Debbie Reynolds and the buyers, I hope they will take good care of these iconic costumes and memorabilias.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Just read the novella by Capote yesterday, so naturally, you guys are in for some screen and promo shots from the movie.. I do think there's a natural law proving this - maybe Newton had something to say on this!

Anyhow, I have never come across someone who didn't like this movie. As I read the novella, I was pleasantly surprised that I was actually able to leave out most of the images of Audrey Hepburn or at least merge her appearance into the novella's descriptions of Holly and the setting; the novella's setting is during the war for those of you who may not know.. I highly recommend reading it.

SPOILER: it does not have the Hollywood happy ending but I do think it is a happy ending and very appropriate to Ms Holiday Golightly.. I like that her name matches the sign on her mailbox, "Traveling". Such a cute detail.

Off course, the fashion could feature multiple entries on this blog because it is amazing. My favourite look though, is probably the least Holly Golightly-look, the pink bubble dress she wears on her date with the Brazillian and when she recieves the news of her brother's death.

It's pink and there's glitter, and it suits my own figure better then those narrow black dresses..

I always tend to look at fashion that way - would I pull it off or not?

I never thought that much about the decor of Holly's apartment except that it was different from Fred's (in the novella he is nameless and we only know him by Holly's nick name for him) designed by his 'patroness' (let's call it that).

But now searching for images, I discover her couch being a bath tub! How awesome is that!? I love it! Now I need to get two of those with the golden lion feet, one for the bathroom and one to transform into a couch.. (with pink pillows off course!)

There you go.. Okay, you might be in store for an 'Inspired by...' post dedicated to Holly soon. I'm still mushing over that one.

But it will include a cat!

Inspired by Vianne Rocher from 'Chocolat'

I finished 'The Lollipop Shoes' yesterday and loved it even more than I thought I would.. And this is going to be a very heavy posts of pictures inspired by Vianne Rocher. I will not spoil any future readers the surprices and suspence so I'm not going to comment on the pictures, but let's just say that I love the folk tales envoked in Joanne Harris' novel.

May these photos bring out a little sunshine in stead of the rain.. (It has rained for two days now.. bummer!) And now I wish I could make a little magic sign or trick to pass the greeting further along.. Nevermind, enjoy!

J'adore Juliette...

I watched Les Enfant du Siécle a couple of days ago and what an amazing film! It stars Juliette Binoche as George Sand and Benoît Magimel as Alfred du Musset - the infamous literary couple and today especially George Sand's works are must reads. I can highly recommend the film, for the story, costumes and decor and everything else really.

It also made me rediscover Juliette Binoche. I LOVED her in Chocolat (how can you NOT love that film?) and I find her one of the most beautiful and talented actresses. I wouldn't mind if I woke up one day looking like her. Her or Rachel Weisz.. That would be fine!
