Weekly Favourites week 18

My, this week has run by fast! Last time I checked it was Monday!?

However, today's Friday and that means lovely goodies from the retailers online.

This past week, I have noticed two trends in dresses.. Either bold prints or vintage silouhettes like from the 30s with Valentino or flapper with Proenza Schouler. Have you noticed a certain trend OFF the trend barometer? Because everyone says 70s and I always manage to find Edwardian inspired or 60s prints! Perhaps that's just me, however. I am fond of those decades and my eyes may well scan for those.
I also think that the long striped dress are so close to Stine Goya's designs from Copenhagen Fashion Week.. And naturally I like that!

I am looking for the perfect red pumps/stilletos as I was forced to throw out my old ones! They had to be put to sleep. They looked like, I hadn't worn anything else for 10 years! I'm not that fond of python, however, I really like the pop of blue on the sole on the bottom ones, and I really like the candy striped heels on the others! Reminds me of Joanne Harris' sequel to 'Chocolat', 'The Lollipop Shoes'.

And I adore the horse shoe ring! So cute, simple, and elegant at the same time.. Perfect!

The Liberation of 1945

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, it is today 66 years since Nazi-Germany capitulated in Holland, North-west Germany, and Denmark.

In Denmark, we celebrate this day wawering our flag everywhere possible.. Or, perhaps I should say, those who know what this day means celebrate. A lot of school children and youngsters don't know anything about it - many even think its our Queen's birthday! Tragic in my opinion.

My grandparents sometimes tell me how it was like during the Occupation, however, they don't go beyond talking about the rationing stamps, curfew or shortage of fabrics (my great-grandmother was a tailor) adn other commodities.

I know that my paternal grandmother was a cook and my grandfather dug peat for fuel. My maternal grabdmother was only a child and pre-teen during these five years but she remembers how she had to walk miles and miles to go to the classes in order to get confirmated. My maternal grandfather was some sort of ambulance assistance or worked at farms around the country.

Anyways, I just wanted to share some photos from the days back in '45 here in Denmark..

Celebration Montgomery's arrival in Copenhagen. Not quite sure why the Stars and Stripes except that we all put the Allied in one big bunch and had a party (or at least until reality and anger hit back.. but that's too depresing to talk about right now. Another time, maybe)

King Christian X. Probably the most iconic figure in Denmark during the Occupation. His daily rides through Copenhagen was a great inspiration to everyone, and a silent protest to the Nazi-enforced government. He was more than ever the embodiment of what was Danish and that he would not be bossed around by men in tanks and Schwarsticas.

This last one says, 'Closed because of Happiness.' So nice...

Light a Candle

Tonight at 20.36 it is exactly 66 years since it was broadcasted that Nazi-Germany has capitulated in Denmark and World War II was over.

In Denmark, we commemorate this event by putting candles in the windows to symbolize the ending of the Nazi-enforced curfew.

Please join us and spread this symbol of peace and may it bring hope to everyone in times of turmoil and strife.

Forever Stylish

I have watched most of the mini-series 'The Kennedys' over the past couple of weeks and I have to say that I really liked it. Not too 'Hollywood' and action-minded and with a sense of respect and effort to understand and portray the good and the bad dynamics in this family. I had had my doubts about Katie Holmes portraying Jackie Kennedy, well, it is a tough one for sure. However, I actually think she did a very nice job. I didn't crinch my teeth or get cramps in my toes of embarrasment, and actually believed her as Jackie. I guess my opposition was of the fact that I don't know anything of her besides 'Dawson's Creek' and her marriage to Tom Cruise!

And naturally, the costumes was just up my alley.. I love the early 60s period (Mad Men is so spot on me!) and Jackie will always be the go-to woman for impecable style. Not American. Not French. Not European. But world class style. No matter what official or formal part you have to perform, you can always turn to her and lure off some of her tricks.

But beware, it takes more than big sunglasses, pill box hats, white gloves and simple dresses - it takes personality and integrity to pull it off without looking like a wannabe or a dress-up.

Weekly Favourites week 17

Well, here at last, my weekly favourites.. And of course, the Wedding (I think you know which one ;)) has a little impact on this week's selection of dresses. So many gorgeous hats and dresses. I especially loved Tara Palmer-something's blue dress but not so keen on her hat though, but I really adored the Spanish-influenced dress and turban with red flowers. Gorgeous!

As for the wedding dress, it was ok. It suited her perfectly and goes in line with her personal style (from what I recall) and had connotations (too heavy, maybe?) to Grace Kelly. However, she's not the worst to look to for fashion ideas, so all in all, very nice. Oh, I did love that she was allowed to have loose hair and a rather short veil.

But enough of the wedding, here's my personal faves from this week..

I absolutely adore the silver Balmain pants and the revival of the Bamboo bag from Gucci - another Grace Kelly reference! And I discovered the webshop Pixie-market a couple of weeks ago and its amazing.. A lot of quirky dresses and stuff you don't see everywhere else. The two dresses on the grey background and the cream shirt with small black hearts can be purchased there..

Anyways, have a lovely weekend in the sun.. Its positively Summer here in Aarhus, I have been wearing no stockings the past fortnight and I'm always chilly!! I almost believe to see a slight difference between the parts of me that was covered and those that weren't.. That's a record for me!

So, I'm on the sunscrean lotion already.. Not a bad start of the year, I think!

Wedding Nails

Just a quick note to say that this week's faves will wait untill tomorrow.. I had a bunch of stuff to do today besides the Royal wedding but I really wanted to see the guests' attire and Rowan "AWESOME" Williams, Arch-bishop of Canterbury! He is by far the coolest guy and makes me smile every time I think of him.. I mean, voice and hair, anyone!?!

 Anyways, a very old and thick soft pink polish with a lot of white shimmer and a sheer with silver stars. Neither very good, had to apply tons of the star polish to get a decent amount on each nail. My nails now looks fake! But from a distance, it looks spectacular! (they weren't expensive though, so price and value go together nicely here)

The last pictures are just some close ups of some of my favourite cocktail rings. I don't really use rings on a daily basis but I like to spice things up when I'm out - so lots of glitter here!

Christel - Illustration Icon

Whenever I'm in need of inspiration for my art I turn to Christel Marrott.

She was a Danish illustrator from the 40s through to the 70s and her pictures and sculptures just sums up the most beautiful reasons why its cool to be a girl and is never out of style. Her original drawings are almost impossible to find for sale, however there's a lot of reproductions and I have a few.

She made paper dolls, book covers, fashion illustration, vignettes, zodiac scultures, stationary, and much more.. My Mum has a lot of her old (first edition prints!) paper dolls, and I have already called dipps.. The look of her style is just so effortless and chic. I'm amazed in how few strokes she needed to capture an emotion or a silhouette of a dress.. I sure wish I looked like her long-legged girly models with big eyes and high cheek bones - wait, is that still in fashion!? Timeless and vintage at the same time. It doesn't get any better than this in my opinion.
